Multimodal Special | Customer Case Studies: Optimodal, ITG, and BTT

With low water levels on the Rhine, the "modal shift" has once again become a hot topic on the logistics agenda. The ability to design flexible supply chains—and to switch seamlessly between barge, rail, and road transport—is more important than ever. Through the use of e-CMR, we are helping to standardize these processes. In this multimodal special, you can read how Optimodal, Inland Terminals Group, and BTT Multimodal Container Solutions are approaching this challenge.

By collaborating with Modality, Secure Logistics, and FleetGo, we are able to offer integrated workflows in which e-CMR serves as a natural component of daily operations. Would you like to learn more? Schedule an online meetup with us!

Implementation of e-CMR at the Neuss terminal

Optimodal Nederland B.V. is taking the next step in the digitalization of its multimodal transport chain. Operating from locations including the terminal in Neuss, Optimodal combines road, rail, and inland waterway transport. In a supply chain such as this—characterized by numerous handovers and multiple involved parties—up-to-date and reliable documentation is essential.

Through the implementation of e-CMR, consignment notes are now created, shared, and managed digitally. Integration with the Modality platform supports both import and export flows, providing greater real-time visibility, reducing manual tasks, and accelerating handover processes.

As Rémon Kerkhof of Optimodal summarizes: “Digitalization is no longer a choice; it is a necessity for maintaining control over the supply chain.”

From paper to a secure, data-driven supply chain

Inland Terminals Group (ITG) handles hundreds of container movements every day. The traditional paper-based CMR process had become increasingly labor-intensive and difficult to scale. By adopting e-CMR, ITG is not only reducing paper usage but, more importantly, gaining better data quality, real-time information, and a reliable digital audit trail.

The solution from Collect + Go is integrated with Modality’s Transport Management System (TMS) and linked to the digital driver identity system provided by Secure Logistics. This allows drivers to sign documents securely and digitally using their existing CargoCard, while data—such as weights, seal numbers, and delivery details—is automatically captured within the relevant container file.

The result: less manual processing, fewer errors, faster workflows, and improved traceability.

Willem van der Ark, COO at ITG, notes: “The true value of e-CMR lies not in simply digitizing paper, but in digitizing the entire supply chain—from dispatch to receipt.”

BTT digitizes container handling with e-CMR

BTT Multimodal Container Solutions is implementing e-CMR to further digitize the administrative processing of container transport. With terminals in Tilburg, Eindhoven, Sittard, and Bergen op Zoom—and connections to locations including Rotterdam, Antwerp, Poland, and China—an efficient flow of documentation is essential.

The solution from Collect + Go integrates with existing operational processes and supports flexible signing at various points of transfer. For instance, a customer can provide a digital signature once a container has been unloaded, immediately triggering a notification that the container is empty and available for pickup.

Furthermore, security and compliance play a key role. With e-CMR certification and ISO 27001 compliance, the solution meets the requirements for digital documentation and data security. Consequently, BTT is expanding its use of the system, including across multimodal corridors such as the Tilburg–Rzepin route.

Available integrations

To effectively implement e-CMR within multimodal flows, integration with other systems is essential. Inland terminals frequently use Modality as their terminal operating system. Secure Logistics, through its Cargocard and XS ID solutions, manages driver access to these terminals. Meanwhile, FleetGo's on-board computer solution has a broad reach among drivers.
